FIELD: aviation.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for orienting an aerial vehicle (AV) with an optical homing head (HH) when moving along a ballistic trajectory. In order to orient an AV, the time of entry of the Earth area into the field of view of the HH is calculated before the launch; after the launch of the AV, the HH is activated; sighting of the sky and the Earth is performed with a wide-angle matrix receiver of the HH; the brightness or colour of the sky and the Earth are determined in the ascending section of the ballistic trajectory; the roll of the AV is determined by the difference in brightness or colour of the sky and the Earth using the matrix receiver in a specific way; the AV is rotated along the roll until the sky area is located above the Earth area on the lines of the matrix receiver.
EFFECT: increase in the accuracy of orienting an AV at any relative values of brightness of the sky and the Earth.
