FIELD: coatings.

SUBSTANCE: inventions group relates to variants of a flux for applying a coating of an alloy based on Zn-Al-Mg by hot dip and to a method for producing a steel product with a coating of an alloy based on Zn-Al-Mg obtained by hot dip using a flux. The flux contains ZnCl2, a chloride with low reactivity with Mg in the metal plating bath, containing at least two chlorides selected from the group of compounds consisting of alkali metal chlorides and alkaline earth metal chlorides. Moreover, the flux essentially contains neither NH4Cl nor NaF, and the composition of ZnCl2 and chloride with low reactivity is controlled so that the liquidus temperature of said flux is 450°C or lower even when all the ZnCl2 contained in said flux was replaced by MgCl2. The low reactivity chloride comprises NaCl and KCl or NaCl, KCl and an auxiliary chloride including at least one of Sn, Pb and Bi chlorides.

EFFECT: obtaining a steel product coated with an alloy based on Zn-Al-Mg by a hot-dip method, having a good appearance of the deposited metal coating, without raising the temperature of the bath, and also without preheating the steel product before dipping into the plating bath.
