SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods and apparatus for audio encoding. The technical result is achieved by executing the following stages of the method: obtaining direction data and diffusivity data from the input signal; estimating a first energy- or amplitude-related factor for the omnidirectional component derived from the input signal, and estimating a second energy- or amplitude-related factor for the directional component derived from the input signal; and generating the acoustic field components, wherein the acoustic component generator is configured to compensate for the energy of the directional component using the first energy- or amplitude-related factor, the second energy- or amplitude-related factor, the direction data, and the diffusivity data.

EFFECT: reduced quantisation error in encoding an audio signal.
