The expected result is achieved by generating a description of a low-order sound field from the input signal up to a predetermined order and mode, while the low-order generator is designed to output a description of a low-order sound field by copying the input signal or performing a weighted combination of input signal channels; generating a description of a medium-order sound field above the said predefined order or with the said predefined order and above the predefined mode and below the high order, using the synthesis of at least one direct part and at least one diffuse part, using direction data and diffusivity data, so that the description of a medium-order sound field contains a direct contribution and diffuse contribution; and generating a description of a high-order sound field having a high-order component or higher, using the synthesis of at least one direct part without the synthesis of any diffuse component, so that the description of a high-order sound field contains only a direct contribution.
