SUBSTANCE: proposed group of inventions relates to the field of fire extinguishing, and in particular to methods for extinguishing fires using fire extinguishing gels, in particular fires of solid combustible materials, accompanied and not accompanied by smoldering, including lithium-ion batteries, as well as to prevent re-ignition, localization and isolation sources of fires of combustible substances, including in low-temperature conditions in open and closed areas. A method for extinguishing and/or preventing a fire, in which a fire-extinguishing gel is supplied to the protected area, obtained by the reaction of the interaction of an alkali metal carbonate and a salt of a polyvalent metal. Potassium carbonate is used as the alkali metal carbonate, and magnesium chloride or its crystalline hydrate is used as the polyvalent metal salt. The interaction of these metal salts is carried out immediately before being supplied to the protected zone by mixing jets of their aqueous solutions or mixing an aerosol based on potassium carbonate with an aqueous solution of magnesium chloride or its crystalline hydrate. This method can be used to extinguish and/or prevent the fire of lithium-ion batteries or to protect surfaces from overheating.

EFFECT: improving the environmental safety of both the process of extinguishing a fire of lithium-ion batteries and its consequences.
