SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of encoding and decoding video data and, in particular, to enabling and disabling cyclic motion compensation. A method is proposed for generating a bit stream of encoded video data using at least one processor, including performing the first determination as to whether the current level of the current image is an independent level; performing a second determination as to whether oversampling of the reference image is enabled for the current level; based on the first determination and the second determination, disabling cyclic compensation for the current level and encoding the current level without cyclic compensation. Cyclic motion compensation can be a useful function for encoding, for example, a 360-degree image projected in an equirectangular projection (ERP) format and can reduce some visual artifacts on the “stitching” line.
