SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for digging planting holes in the soil before planting. The method of digging planting holes includes placing a pipe with a gate valve on the soil surface in a vertical position, pressing on the pipe, gradually introducing the pipe into the soil surface and simultaneously opening the gate valve by turning the jaws of the gate valve around the axes of their attachment to the pipe until the stops mounted on side arms touch the outer surface of the pipe. After that, the pipe is removed from the soil, simultaneously closing the gate valve by turning its jaws around the axes of their attachment to the pipe due to its own weight, as the pipe is removed from the formed hole.

EFFECT: reduced labour intensity when digging planting holes in the soil achieved due to automatic opening and closing of the gate valve in forming a planting hole.
