SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for digging planting holes in the soil before planting seedlings and yearling of forest and agricultural crops. The method for forming planting holes includes placing a pipe with a gate valve on the soil surface in a vertical position and pressing on the pipe, gradually penetrating the pipe into the soil surface. Simultaneously with the penetration of the pipe into the soil, the gate valve is opened by turning the jaws of the gate valve around the axes of their attachment to the pipe until the stops mounted on the side levers come into contact with the outer surface of the pipe, with simultaneous elastic compression of the springs installed between the side levers and the outer surface of the pipe. After that, the pipe is removed from the soil, simultaneously closing the gate valve by turning its jaws around the axes of their fastening to the pipe due to the straightening of the elastically compressed springs as the pipe is removed from the formed hole.

EFFECT: reduced labour intensity when digging planting holes in the soil achieved due to automatic opening and closing of the gate valve in forming a planting hole.
