FIELD: identification of substances; separation of ions.
SUBSTANCE: identification of substances using the method of separation of ions based on ion mobility. Potential difference is applied between the first ion gate electrode and the second ion gate electrode in order to prevent the release of ions from the reaction region of the ion mobility spectrometer; opening the ion gate to allow ions to move from the reaction region to the modification region between the first electrode and the second electrode; applying a radio frequency (RF) voltage between the first electrode and the second electrode to fragment the ions in the modification region to form progeny ions; allowing the daughter ions to move from the modification region to the drift region of the ion mobility spectrometer towards the collector; closing the ion gate and determining the time of flight of the daughter ions from the ion gate to the collector, wherein the first electrode is spatially displaced relative to the second electrode in the drift direction in the ion mobility spectrometer.
EFFECT: enabling better identification of ions.
