FIELD: ion separation.
SUBSTANCE: gate contains a first gate electrode and a second gate electrode. The gate voltage between the two electrodes is controlled to unlock and lock the gate to allow analyte ions to pass through the gate in a drift direction, the elongated conductive elements of the first gate electrode being aligned with the elongated conductive elements of the second gate electrode in the drift direction. The control involves changing simultaneously: (a) the voltage at the first gate electrode; and (b) the voltage across the second gate electrode.
EFFECT: increasing the sensitivity of the measuring cell of the ion mobility spectrometer.
