FIELD: metal processing.

SUBSTANCE: invention is related to a unit for melting and/or heating a metallic material. The installation for melting and/or heating a metallic material contains a furnace, a power supply means and a power supply device connected between the power supply means and the furnace, while the power supply device contains at least one transformer connected to the mains and configured to receive a primary alternating voltage (Up) and primary alternating current (Ip) and convert them into secondary alternating voltage (Us) and secondary alternating current (Is), rectifiers connected to the transformer and configured to convert secondary alternating voltage (Us) and secondary alternating current (Is) into direct intermediate voltage (Ui) and direct intermediate current (Ii), converters connected on the one hand to the rectifiers, and on the other hand to the furnace, made with the ability to convert direct intermediate voltage (Ui) and direct intermediate current (Ii) into alternating supply voltage (Ua) and alternating supply current (Ia) supplied to the furnace, which can be selectively set using a control unit connected to the converters. The power supply means comprises at least one alternative source of energy, different and independent from the mains, connected to the power supply device and configured to supply energy to power the furnace in addition to or as an alternative to the electricity supplied by the mains, and at least one said alternative energy source contains a direct current source configured to supply direct voltage (UDC) and current (IDC), while the direct current source is connected to the intermediate circuit of the power supply device behind the rectifiers, and a unidirectional electrical component is provided between the direct source and the intermediate direct circuit capable of ensuring the single direction of the current produced and preventing damage to the components of said power supply device by the incorrect polarity of the electric current (IDC) at the input.

EFFECT: providing a unit for melting and/or heating metallic materials, which can operate, at least partially, independently of the mains.
