SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to the use of a composition of formula I
where M denotes one or more elements characterized in the ionic state by an effective ionic radius in the range of 70-92 pm, and is a number in the range of 2.5≤a≤3.5, b is a number in the range 1.5≤b≤ 5.0, s is a number in the range 0.0≤c≤2.0, d is a number in the range 0.0≤d≤4.0 where the sum of a, b and c is in the range 5≤a+b+c≤8 and where ≥90 wt.% of the composition is in the pentlandite phase, for electrocatalytic water splitting. The invention also relates to an electrode.
EFFECT: use of the invention allows the use of a higher current density, and the composition also has better resistance to sulphur compounds and better start-stop properties compared to materials of the prior art.
