SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an aerosol generating article for producing an inhalable aerosol when heated, the aerosol generating article comprising a rod of an aerosol generating substrate formed from a sheet of homogenized tobacco material or a tobacco lamina-based material, and to a method for producing such a rod from an aerosol generating substrate. An aerosol generating article (10) for producing an inhalable aerosol when heated, wherein the article contains a rod of an aerosol generating substrate (12), while the rod of an aerosol generating substrate contains a sheet (26) of homogenized tobacco material. The homogenized tobacco material is located in the longitudinal direction between the upstream end (24) of the rod and the downstream end (22) of the rod. In addition, the aerosol generating article comprises a wrapper (20) surrounding the homogenized plant material. The sheet contains a plurality of formed fluid passages (28) passing through the thickness of the homogenized tobacco material sheet (26) and configured to establish fluid communication between opposite sides of the sheet (26).
