SUBSTANCE: halogen-containing compound represented by formula I, where R¹, R², R³, and R⁴ in formula I are the same or different and each independently represents chlorine or fluorine, all of R¹, R², R³, and R⁴ are ortho substituents; R⁵ and R⁶ are the same or different and are each independently hydrogen, C₁-C₁₂ alkyl, C₃-C₁₂ cycloalkyl, phenyl, methylphenyl, ethylphenyl, or chlorophenyl. Also proposed are the use of the said halogen-containing compound as a ligand in an ethylene oligomerization catalyst composition, an ethylene oligomerization catalyst composition containing said halogen-containing compound, and methods for ethylene oligomerization, trimerization, and tetramerization using the said catalyst composition.

EFFECT: significant improvement in activity and selectivity in the ethylene oligomerization reaction, in particular in the ethylene trimerization and ethylene tetramerization reactions, and significant reduction in formation of by-products such as cycloolefin and cyclization product.
