SUBSTANCE: group of inventions is intended for the treatment of an eye disease or condition. The method of producing/release/delivering/discharge of mucin from the cornea and/or into the cornea includes the step of administering a composition containing a safe and effective amount of an extract having retinol-like properties and/or beneficial effects for use in the treatment of dry eye syndrome, selected from one or more of plant extracts or sources of extracts containing Acronychia acidula. In other embodiments, a method is provided to maintain the concentration of MU5AC in tear fluid in the range of 8 to 15 ng per 1 milligram of protein or higher; a method of treating a patient with reduced or low production/release/delivery/discharge of mucin from the cornea and/or into the cornea; a method of preventing or treating symptoms of dry eye syndrome; and a method of improving the antimicrobial properties of a patient's lacrimal fluid.

EFFECT: using the invention allows to induce, stimulate and/or improve the production/release/delivery/discharge of hyaluronic acid from the cornea and/or into the cornea.
