SUBSTANCE: method for reducing the fitness of an insect vector of a human pathogen, the method including delivering to the insect vector a composition containing: (a) at least one antimicrobial peptide having at least 90% sequence identity with one or more of the following: scorpion peptide Uy192 (SEQ ID NO: 227), UyCT3 (SEQ ID NO: 228), D3 (SEQ ID NO: 229), D10 (SEQ ID NO: 230), Uy17 (SEQ ID NO: 231), drosomycin (SEQ ID NO: 93), dermsidin (SEQ ID NO: 81), andropine (SEQ ID NO: 83), moricin (SEQ ID NO: 84), ceratotoxin (SEQ ID NO: 85), abecin (SEQ ID NO: 86), apidecin (SEQ ID NO: 87), profenin (SEQ ID NO: 88), indolicidin (SEQ ID NO: 89), protegrin (SEQ ID NO: 90) and tachyplesin (SEQ ID NO: 91), and (b) a cell penetrating peptide having an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 211-218; wherein the antimicrobial peptide targets a microorganism present in the insect vector, resulting in a decrease in the fitness of the insect vector compared to a control insect vector not treated with the composition.

EFFECT: reducing the fitness of a number of insects carrying pathogens transmitted by vectors that cause disease in humans.
