FIELD: medical equipment.

SUBSTANCE: method for collecting blood component by apheresis includes: pumping whole blood into a centrifuge from a donor, introducing whole blood into a blood component collection reservoir having an inlet and an outlet, wherein the whole blood is introduced through the inlet, rotating the centrifuge to provide centrifugal force to act on the whole blood to separating the whole blood in the blood component collection reservoir into at least plasma and a blood component containing concentrated red blood cells, separating the plasma from the whole blood, extracting the plasma through the outlet of the blood component collection reservoir into a container, detecting when the red blood cells are extracted through the outlet and, upon detection of red blood cells and while the centrifuge continues to rotate, expelling the plasma back into the blood component collection reservoir through the outlet to move the red blood cells through the inlet and out of the blood component collection reservoir. An apheresis system, embodiments of a centrifuge assembly, a method for automatically loading a fluid line circuit into a centrifuge assembly, embodiments of a device for separating blood components, a blood component collection circuit, a blood component collection cassette for use with a centrifuge, a blood component collection kit, and a method for moving fluid substances through a blood component collection cassette for use with a centrifuge are disclosed.
