SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in mechanical engineering. In the proposed method of igniting a compressed direct arc, an auxiliary arc is used between the plasmatron electrode and the nozzle to form a plasma jet blown by the plasma-forming gas towards the product. The pilot arc is ignited using a high-voltage, high-frequency discharge from an ignition device built into the inverter power source. The second pole of the high-voltage high-frequency source is connected to the device; to ignite the pilot arc, the device and the nozzle are short-circuited. After this, the main power source and the ignition device are turned on. Following the ignition of the pilot arc, the connection between the product and the nozzle is opened, igniting the working arc.
EFFECT: reduction in the duration of the transition of the auxiliary arc to the steady state, and a reduction in the duration of the transition of the working arc to the steady state.
