SUBSTANCE: prebiotic composition is proposed, the said composition contains an amount of sphingan in the form of an oligosaccharide with a DP from 2 to 30 effective for the manifestation of prebiotic activity. Also the following are provided: the methods of producing high/medium/low acyl sphingan as an oligosaccharide (“SOS”) (variants), a method of stimulating the growth of beneficial bacteria in the colon of a mammal, a method of reducing the level of propionate and/or increasing the level of butyrate in the colon of a mammal, a method of improving the integrity of the intestinal barrier in the mammalian colon and a method of reducing TNF-α levelsα and/or IL-8 in the mammalian colon.
EFFECT: invention provides a highly effective prebiotic composition.
