FIELD: corrosion protection.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of corrosion protection of metallic materials. A method for combating corrosion caused by acidic compounds in a chemical process apparatus being a petroleum refining process, a petrochemical process or a steam generating process, which includes adding to the chemical process apparatus at least one quaternary ammonium hydroxide of formula (I):
in which R1, R2, R3 are all independently C1-C6-alkyl; R4 is C2-C18-alkyl; R3 and R4 together with a nitrogen atom can also form a 5 or 6 membered saturated nitrogen atom containing heterocycle which is unsubstituted or contains 1 or 2 methyl groups.
EFFECT: reducing or preventing corrosion or contamination in an apparatus intended for carrying out a chemical process in which corrosion or contamination is caused by acidic compounds.
