SUBSTANCE: methods for preparing coal or a sintering additive to regulate the size of granules, as well as methods for producing coke. One variant of the method of preparing coal, used alone or in combination with other coal or coals, or a sintering additive as a raw material for the production of coke, is characterized by the fact that before delivering the coal or sintering additive to the coke oven battery. For a set of coals or sintering additives assessed as being of low grade as coke feedstock, a range of degree of cohesion, (a - b)/a, or height, a, is preliminarily determined based on the relationship between the degree of cohesion, (a - b)/a, or the height, a, and strength of the coke obtained by mixing said aggregate of coals or sintering additives with other coal or coals and carbonizing, wherein a is the height of the char adhering to the mixer, b is the height of the char on the inner wall of the container, and the said char is formed by heating the specified aggregate of coals or sintering additive in the specified container while rotating the specified stirrer. The size of the coal or sintering additive granules used as coke feedstock is then adjusted so that the amount of granules of 6 mm or larger in said coal or sintering additive is judged to be of low grade as coke feedstock according to the specified degree of cohesion, (a - b)/a, or height, a, was 30 wt.% or less.

EFFECT: developing a method for preparing coal or a sintering additive by assessing the possibility of reducing the strength of coke with a given coal and adjusting the size of coal granules, which can reduce the strength of coke.
