SUBSTANCE: invention relates to aerosol-generating apparatus and methods for controlling aerosol-generating apparatus. Aerosol-generating apparatus comprises: a heating unit configured to heat the aerosol-forming material; an input interface configured to receive an input signal to select the working mode from multiple working modes, wherein the multiple working modes include multiple heating modes, wherein the multiple heating modes include a first heating mode and a second heating mode; wherein, when the apparatus is operating in the first heating mode, a component of the heating unit should be heated to a first temperature, and when the apparatus is operating in the second heating mode, the component of the heating unit should be heated to a second temperature; and a controller configured to perform the following: detect an effect on the input interface corresponding to the input signal; based on the detected effect on the input interface corresponding to the input signal, detect the selected working mode from the multiple heating modes; and, depending on the detected effect on the input interface, activate the heating unit in order to start heating the aerosol-forming material.
