FIELD: smoking accessories.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to an aerosol generating device. Aerosol-generating device comprises an electrical heating appliance for heating an aerosol-forming substrate in order to generate an aerosol, and at least one of a user switch configured to allow a user of the device to initiate a pause of using the device, and at least one sensor configured to output a sensor signal indicating that the device is in use by a user or in use pause. Device further comprises a controller configured to generate a pause signal in response to a sensor signal indicating that the device is in use pause, and/or in response to the user initiating a pause of using the device using the user switch. Heating device is configured to heat the aerosol-forming substrate at a first temperature level in an aerosol release mode and, in response to the pause signal, heating the aerosol-forming substrate at a second temperature level below the first temperature level in a pause mode. It is possible to interrupt user session and to resume this session at a later stage with still acceptable quality of aerosol. Generation of the aerosol can be stopped in a timely manner in order to avoid the continued, but undesirable, consumption of the aerosol-forming substrate, and resumed back to the normal heating mode of operation to generate the aerosol when the user wishes to resume the user session.
EFFECT: minimizing substrate consumption in pause mode and avoiding steam condensation in the device, which has a negative effect on the quality of the unspent aerosol-forming substrate.
