FIELD: hydroacoustics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to hydroacoustics and can be used to construct systems for classifying carriers of sources of sonar signals in modern hydroacoustic systems. In the disclosed method, probing signals (PS) of the source are successively received, at the first PS reception cycle from the beginning to the end of the irradiation of the receiver carrier, the time of arrival of the first PS is determined, the time of arrival of at least 3 consecutive PSs is determined, time intervals between the moments of arrival of each two following PS and the difference between them. If the difference of time intervals of the next PS is less than the difference of time intervals of the previous PS, it is considered that the PS source carrier approaches. Duration of the first PS reception cycle is determined, at the second and subsequent PS reception cycles it is determined whether the carrier of the signal source is approaching. Duration of PS reception cycles and time intervals between reception cycles are compared. And if the source carrier is determined as approaching the receiver carrier, the PS reception cycle duration and the time interval between cycles increase with the cycle number increase, said carrier of PS source is considered to search for target on circulation with increasing diameter and is a torpedo.

EFFECT: determining the manoeuvring trajectory of the PS source carrier and its subsequent classification.
