SUBSTANCE: invention relates to hydroacoustics and can be used to construct systems for classifying carriers of sources of sonar signals in modern hydroacoustic systems. In the method, comprising the sequential reception of the sounding signal (SS) of the source, on the first SS reception cycle from the beginning to the end of the irradiation of the receiver carrier, the time of arrival of the first SS is determined, determining the arrival time of at least three successive SSs, the time interval between the arrival times of each two successive SSs, the difference of the measured time intervals, if the difference of time intervals of the next SS is less than the difference of time intervals of the previous SS, it is considered that the carrier of the source of the SS is approaching, the duration of the first reception cycle of the SS is determined, at the second SS reception cycle, determining whether the signal source carrier is approaching, determining the duration of the second SS reception cycle and the time interval between the end of the first cycle and the beginning of the second, duration of SS reception cycles, time interval between reception cycles and duration of the second SS reception cycle are compared and if the carrier of the source on receiving cycles of the SS is determined as approaching the carrier of the receiver, the duration of the second cycle of receiving the SS is greater than the duration of the first and the time interval between cycles is greater than the duration of the second cycle of receiving the SS, it is considered that this SS source carrier is searching for a target on circulation with increasing diameter and is a torpedo.

EFFECT: shorter time for determining the trajectory of manoeuvring of the carrier of a sounding signal (SS) source and its subsequent classification.
