FIELD: electrochromic devices.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to transparent electrochromic devices. Electrochromic article comprises first and second substrates; first and second electrodes; sealing material; electrochromic composition. Sealing material is formed from an organic polymer material having an oxygen transmission rate (OTR), which is less than or equal to 2 cubic centimeters per square meter at atmospheric pressure per day (cm3/m2·day·atm). Article additionally contains interlayer material, and sealing material is overlapped with electrochromic composition in stepped orientation, in which part of sealing material is located between part of second surface of first electrode and part of electrochromic composition, and a portion of the sealing material passes over a portion of the first surface of the second electrode.

EFFECT: invention provides a single sealing material, which serves as both a mechanical barrier and a permeability barrier.
