FIELD: rail vehicles.

SUBSTANCE: use to control local sections of railway rails. Essence of the invention consists in the fact that in the vicinity of the assumed defective section a wheel searching system with an elastic shell is installed on the rail, filled with immersion liquid and containing a set of electroacoustic transducers, the angles of entry and the number of which are selected based on the required resolution and completeness of sounding the monitored section, moving the wheel searching system along the rail surface, periodically probing the defective section, receiving the ultrasonic signals reflected from the defect, wherein wheel searching system dimensions are selected from the possibility of scanning available surfaces of rail head, web and rail foot blade, defect is searched for by sequential scanning of the rail from two or more surfaces. Additionally, a marker is installed on the defective section, the wheel searching system is equipped with a displacement sensor and a marker fixation sensor, ultrasonic signals from the defect and from the marker are recorded, taking into account signals from the marker, all echo signals received from different surfaces of rail scanning are synchronized, analysed together and defect parameters are determined.

EFFECT: increasing the reliability and productivity of monitoring local sections of rails while simultaneously reducing the weight of the scanner.
