FIELD: chemical or physical processes.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method of purifying ethylene glycol of non-petroleum origin. This method includes the following steps: (i) mixing one or more entrainment agents with ethylene glycol of non-petroleum origin to obtain a charge, containing ethylene glycol azeotrope; (ii) boiling the charge containing an azeotrope of ethylene glycol with a reverse flow in an azeotropic or rectification column at pressure of 1 to 101 kPa abs; (iii) obtaining extracted material from the top of the azeotropic or rectification column; (iv) adding water to the extracted material to dissolve ethylene glycol in the azeotrope; (v) separating the water-insoluble entrainment agent from the aqueous solution of ethylene glycol; and (vi) obtaining ethylene glycol as a result of dehydration and purification of the obtained aqueous solution of ethylene glycol. One or more azeotropes are selected from octanol and its isomers, decanol and its isomers, heptanol and its isomers, octane and its isomers and nonanone and its isomers.
EFFECT: increasing purity of ethylene glycol to 99–90% or more under conditions of high degree of extraction of ethylene glycol of 95% or more.
