FIELD: physics, video.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to video coding. A method of encoding a motion vector in a video coding process comprising determining one of a plurality of modes for a motion vector prediction process for a current block of video data, wherein the determined mode is a merge mode; determining a set of candidate blocks, wherein the determined set comprises a lower left candidate block, a left candidate block, an upper candidate block, a right upper candidate block, a left upper candidate block and a temporal candidate block; and performing the motion vector prediction process for the current block using the determined mode and the set of candidate blocks, wherein one candidate block in the set of candidate blocks is designated as an additional block candidate, and wherein the additional block candidate is used in merge mode if the other of the block candidates of the set of block candidates is unavailable or invalid.
EFFECT: efficient digital video coding to reduce or eliminate redundancy which is inherent in video sequences.
