FIELD: welding.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods of restoring defective sections of rail head rolling surface (P50, P65) by aluminothermic surfacing. Damaged section of rail head rolling surface is cut out in compliance with its preliminary measurement, note here that cut surface features radial concave shape. Length of radial cut along rail and its maximum depth are selected depending on length of damaged section of rail. Then, mold is installed, cut surface is preheated, thermite reaction is initiated, discharge of molten metal from the crucible into the mold and removal of the mold after crystallisation of the metal. Then, the built-up surface is machined: deburring, rough and finish grinding.

EFFECT: higher quality of surfacing by reducing the likelihood of defects in the form of lack of penetration, internal pores, cracks, hardening structures.
