FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method of producing tolbutamide, which relates to synthetic hypoglycemic agents of the first generation and is used for treating type II diabetes mellitus of moderate severity. Method involves reacting tosyl chloride with sodium or potassium cyanate in the presence of an organic base in a medium of a polar organic solvent at room temperature in an argon or nitrogen atmosphere or in air without access to moisture. Further, a mixture of butylamine or its hydrochloride with or without an inorganic salt is added to the formed reaction mixture with further treatment of the reactor contents with hydrochloric or acetic acid and water, with subsequent extraction and purification of the end product.
EFFECT: improved technical and economic parameters of the technological process, increased safety and overall efficiency of the process, reduced number of technological operations and obtaining the end product of high quality with output of up to 81%.
