FIELD: inorganic chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to inorganic chemistry and specifically to production of anhydrous cerium tetrafluoride, which is a promising reagent for inorganic and organic synthesis, as well as optical materials science. Method of producing cerium tetrafluoride involves reacting cerium trifluoride with xenon difluoride in a sealed reactor while heating. Mixture of previously ground into powder in a dry box atmosphere 0.3–0.5 g of cerium trifluoride and 0.45–0.75 g of xenon difluoride is loaded into a teflon reactor with volume of 14 cm3 . Reactor is sealed in dry box atmosphere, heated to 330 °C and held at this temperature for 1 hour. Then it is cooled to room temperature and the procedure of loading xenon difluoride of the same mass into the reactor in the atmosphere of a dry box is repeated three times, followed by similar heating of the sealed reactor and its holding.
EFFECT: obtaining anhydrous cerium tetrafluoride under conditions which exclude its interaction with atmospheric moisture.
