FIELD: organic chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry and specifically to a process for producing isopropyl alcohol by catalytic hydrogenation of acetone with hydrogen. Disclosed is a method of producing a catalyst containing not more than 30 wt.% nickel. Method includes steps of impregnating aluminium oxide with pore volume of up to 0.9 cm3/g with nickel nitrate, drying, calcination at temperature not higher than 200 °C and restorative activation. Prior to activation, the catalyst is treated with an aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate to remove nitrate ions with molar ratio of hydrocarbonate/nitrate ions of not less than 1.1 and washed with water to a residual content of nitrate ions of not more than 2.5 wt.%.
EFFECT: invention enables to obtain a catalyst with a high degree of conversion of acetone to isopropyl alcohol and high selectivity with respect to isopropyl alcohol while reducing the calcination temperature of the catalyst and increasing the explosion safety of the process.
