FIELD: ice engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to ice engineering, particularly, to ice breaking by displacement vessels. Method of breaking ice cover consists in action on it by gravitational waves excited by vessel 3 going along edge 1 of ice cover 2. Between ice edge 1 and corresponding, i.e. adjacent to it, side of vessel 3, low pressure area 5 is periodically created for a period of time equal to half the period of resonance flexural-gravity waves in ice cover 2. Low pressure area 5 is created periodically by periodically turning ship 3 through the course angle α for a time equal to half the period of resonance flexural-gravity waves in ice cover 2.
EFFECT: increasing the ice-breaking capacity of the vessel.
