SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods and devices for encoding and decoding video. Video encoding method includes obtaining a size of an encoding unit comprising a sub-unit; determining the need to provide a bidirectional optical flow (BDOF) for the encoding unit based on the size of the encoding unit; determining the need to deactivate the BDOF for the subunit of the coding unit based on the similarity of predicting a plurality of prediction signals associated with the subunit, wherein the method also comprises: obtaining a first prediction signal associated with a first reference list of a sub-block, and obtaining a second prediction signal associated with the second reference list of the sub-unit based on the determination of the need to provide BDOF for the coding unit; and determining the similarity of the plurality of prediction signals based on the first prediction signal and the second prediction signal; prediction of the sub-block based on determining the need to deactivate the BDOF for the sub-block; and encoding the coding unit based on the predicted subblock.
