SUBSTANCE: invention relates to video encoding and compression. Disclosed are systems and methods for refining a sub-block/block, including refining a sub-block/block boundary, such as refining block boundary prediction refinement with optical flow (BBPROF). Block containing the current sub-block is decoded based on the sampling value for the first pixel, obtained based on, for example, the MV for the current sub-block, the MV for the sub-block adjacent to the current sub-block, and the sampling value for the second pixel adjacent to the first pixel. BBPROF includes determination of spatial gradient in pixel(s)/location(s) of sample. Difference MV is calculated between the current subunit and one or more neighbouring subunits. MV offset is determined on the sampling pixel(s)/location(s) based on the MV difference and a sampling offset value for the pixel in the current sub-block can be determined. Prediction of the list of reference images is refined by adding the calculated sampling value shifted to the sub-block prediction.

EFFECT: high efficiency of video compression.
