FIELD: performing operations.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the technology of producing carbon materials with a developed surface and porosity, in particular to a method for activating coke. Method involves treating coke with a solution of an oxidising agent in sulphuric acid, diluting the reaction mixture with water, washing to weakly acidic pH, drying and activating the dried oxidised coke with potassium hydroxide. Oxidising agent used is ammonium persulphate, and the sulphuric acid used is sulphuric acid with H2SO4 content of 98-100%. Oxidation is carried out with gradual addition of ammonium persulphate to a suspension of coke in sulphuric acid and while cooling the reaction mixture, wherein ammonium persulphate is added at such a rate that the temperature of the reaction mixture is maintained within range of 40 to 50 °C. Oxidised coke is washed with diluted aqueous solution of nitric acid with pH 2.5-3. Prior to activation, dried oxidised coke is subjected to heat treatment at 500 °C.
EFFECT: obtaining activated carbons with high specific surface area and porosity by changing the nature of the oxidant and selecting process modes of oxidation, which enables to eliminate release of very toxic vapours.
