FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to methods of treating a female human subject having glucose tolerance, or a female human subject with hepatic steatosis, wherein the subject is a reference for SLC39A5 or heterozygous for a variant nucleic acid molecule with predicted loss of function SLC39A5, as well as methods for identifying a female human subject having a high risk of glucose tolerance or an increased risk of hepatic steatosis. Methods of treatment involve the use of a therapeutic agent for treating or inhibiting glucose tolerance or a SLC39A5 inhibitor. Methods for identifying subjects with a high risk of glucose tolerance or an increased risk of hepatic steatosis involve determining the presence or absence of a variant nucleic acid molecule with predicted loss of function SLC39A5.
EFFECT: inventions make it possible to identify human subjects, which are reference by SLC39A5 or heterozygous by variant with predicted loss of function SLC39A5, which have a high risk of developing high serum glucose and hepatic steatosis, so that subjects from a risk group or subjects with an active disease can be treated accordingly.
