Methods of treatment involve the use of a therapeutic agent for treating or inhibiting glucose tolerance or a SLC39A5 inhibitor. Methods for identifying subjects with a high risk of glucose tolerance or an increased risk of hepatic steatosis involve determining the presence or absence of a variant nucleic acid molecule with predicted loss of function SLC39A5.
