METHOD FOR DIAGNOSING OLFACTORY DYSFUNCTION Russian patent published in 2025 - IPC A61B5/08

Abstract RU 2834954 C1

FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medical equipment, namely to a diagnostic technique for olfactory dysfunction. Method involves subjective recognition of the presence of odour and its identification. Method employs a combination of three olfactants, which are dilutions of oily ether solutions of orange, cinnamon and mint in concentration of 25 %, 12.5 %, 6.25 % and one refined sunflower oil non-olfactant, and the olfactory sensitivity study is carried out successively by presenting olfactants to the patient from the lowest concentration until the patient recognizes the presence of an odour and can identify it. Results of the study are evaluated using a scoring system of sensitivity to dilution in range of 0 to 3, where: 1 point – concentration 25 %, 2 points – concentration 12.5 %, 3 points – concentration 6.25 %, average sensitivity score is calculated. If this value is equal to 0.33 or less, the patient is diagnosed with anosmia. If the value ranges from 0.83 to 1.67, hyposmia of 2nd degree is diagnosed. If the average sensitivity score is from 1.83 to 2.00, typosmia of 1st degree is diagnosed, and if value is 2.67 and more, the absence of olfactory dysfunction is stated.

EFFECT: obtaining a simple, easy-to-use and reliable method of conducting threshold olfactometry in case of olfactory dysfunction.
