FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the technology of producing radioactive isotopes for medical purposes, in particular actinium-225, as well as other radionuclides which are formed when thorium is irradiated with charged particles. In the method of making a target from metal thorium, the body of the target is made from a monolith of metal thorium enclosed in a sealed shell. Shell is made from a niobium metal ring and a niobium metal foil welded to thorium using diffusion welding and additionally sealed by laser or electron-beam welding. Before welding, a V-shaped hollow groove is turned in the inner part of the niobium ring of the target body for thorium expansion during heating during welding. Further, diffusion welding of niobium metal foil with thorium metal is carried out at temperature from 1250 to 1430 °C at pressure on target surface area of 30-150 kg/cm2.

EFFECT: tightness, efficient heat removal and, as a result, reliability of thorium target with high efficiency of radionuclides production.
