FIELD: performing operations.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to surface treatment of parts made from carbon steels for the purpose of directed change of the microstructure of their working surface to improve various operational characteristics. Method of laser microstructuring of surface layer of carbon steels includes mutual continuous movement of processed surface along axis X, and along axis Y – focused light spot of laser beam with power 1,200-1,400 W, converted into vertical line optical scanning, length of which is equal to the limiting external dimension of the treated surface along the Y axis, and the width is equal to the diameter of the focused light spot of the laser beam, to ensure the area of the treated surface coating along the X axis per second of not less than 80% per scanning width. A microstructured surface layer is formed with carbon content in the cross section of not less than 2%, the laser beam is reciprocated at a rate of Vr=2,500-10,000 mm/s and providing a scanning feed rate along the processed surface of 4-17 mm/s for uniform and uniform thickness local heating to temperature of 1,600-1,800 °C with a laser radiation absorption rate of such a surface of not less than 150 mm2/s.

EFFECT: providing a condition for carbon migration from inner layers to surface layer, thereby forming a microstructured surface layer of increased hardness without destruction with carbon content in its cross section of not less than 2%.
