FIELD: hydroacoustics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to hydroacoustics and specifically to methods and apparatus for detecting, classifying and determining coordinates of marine objects. In the disclosed method, a noise direction-finding station with a bottom linear multi-element antenna selects underwater objects from a stream of objects crossing a secure boundary. At that, performing the classification into the "underwater object" – "above-water object" classes by determining the detected object immersion depth, for this, multibeam signal propagation is used in ocean waveguide by measuring maximums in object broadband noise autocorrelation function, caused by object signal interference coming to antenna via forward beam and reflected from sea surface beam.

EFFECT: high probability of classifying an underwater intruder by determining its depth.
