FIELD: radar ranging.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to radar and can be used for experimental estimation of the contribution of areas of a large-size object, particularly an aircraft, to its integral value of the scattering cross section (SCS). In the disclosed method, a large object is irradiated with a multi-frequency pulsed signal, the reflected signal is measured and recorded depending on the radiation frequency and the turning angle of the object, its two-dimensional radar image in the given angular sector is synthesized and memorized, conformity of local scattering centres on the radar image with coordinates of areas of the object is determined; all scattering centres are excluded from the radar image except those relating to the measured area of the object. Complex envelope of the reflected signal is reconstructed, from which the SCS of the area of the large object is determined.

EFFECT: shorter measurement time and high accuracy of determining SCS of areas of large-size objects.
