FIELD: aerosol-generating devices.
SUBSTANCE: aerosol-generating device (200) comprises identifier (212) for determining one or both of whether aerosol-generating article (300) is engaged with the device and whether the aerosol generating article in engagement with the device belongs to the first group of articles, wherein the identifier comprises light source (214), power supply unit (206) for supplying current to the light source, switch (222) configured to move between a closed position in which the power supply unit can supply current to the light source, and an open position in which the power supply cannot supply current to the light source, and chronometer (226) connected to the switch. Chronometer is configured to move the switch from the closed position to the open position, if the current supplied to the light source or the indication of the current supplied to the light source exceeds a threshold value for longer than a predetermined period of time. Also disclosed is a method of operating an aerosol-generating device. Movement of the switch from the closed position to the open position can protect the light source from excess currents or voltage.
EFFECT: possibility of protection of electric components against excessive currents or voltages in case of controller failure.
