FIELD: ferrous metallurgy, in particular, oxygen converter steel making. SUBSTANCE: method includes charging into converter of 1/4-3/4 of total volume of metal scrap; heating of metal scrap for 2-6 min by burning of 10-25 kg/min of gas and long-flame coals per ton of scrap in flow of oxygen supplied at flow rate of 0.8-1.5 cu.m/min for one kilogram of coal with lance in position of 18-35 calibers above the level of charged metal scrap. One-two minutes before completion of scrap heating, anthracite or lean coal is added in the amount of 0.5-2.5 of coal consumption for heating. After heating of metal scrap, the balance of scrap is charged. For preliminary heating, using is made of heavy-weight part of scrap intended for melting of metal scrap. Operation of metal scrap heating may be periodically repeated after layer charging of 1/4-1/2 of total scrap volume. EFFECT: reduced consumption of pig iron, increased output of melting unit and higher efficiency of scrap heating. 3 cl, 1 tbl
