FIELD: nuclear technology. SUBSTANCE: method consists in injection of cesium in the form of vapor into inner space of shell of fuel elements with rate not below than rate of escape of iodine generated by fission of nuclear fuel. Cesium-treated graphite can be used as source of vapors of cesium. Inner surface of shell of fuel element can be coated with graphite with subsequent treatment in cesium vapors.
