FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process wherein ethylene or vinyl chloride are chlorinated with chlorine at a temperature from 20 C to boiling temperature of the reaction mixture in presence of salt of tertiary ammonium cation and metallohydrochloric acid anion (as catalyst) followed by distilling off the product. The process may be simplified when, as catalyst, 0.002-5 wt % of 1-(2- chloroethyl)pyridinium polychlorometallates of the general formula are used, where M is iron or aluminium with n = 4 or M is cobalt with n = 3. EFFECT: increased selectivity of process with long life time of catalyst.
