FIELD: analysis of materials. SUBSTANCE: light reflected from object to be identified is passed through controlled light filter whose pass-band is not narrower than 380-770 nm and whose transmission spectrum is adjustable, intensity of transmitted light is measured at several predetermined transmission spectra, and measured values are used to identify object. In addition, intensity of transmitted light is measured at uniform transmission spectrum of light filter and values of intensities found at predetermined transmission spectra are divided by this value; results obtained are used to identify object. In the process, transmission spectra predetermined are such that maximum difference between average values of measured intensities are displayed for many objects of same class for different classes of objects. Light additionally reflected from object is split into several beams which are passed through respective light filters whose transmission spectra are suitably preset and at the same time light intensity is measured at outputs of all light filters; results obtained are used to identify object. EFFECT: facilitated procedure. 1 dwg, 1 tbl
