FIELD: production of activated carbon. SUBSTANCE: method involves subjecting solid fuel particles to pneumatic separation into two fractions. The fraction with particles of a larger size is dried and carbonized, producing semi-coke and gaseous products of carbonization. Semi-coke is activated with water steam, forming activated carbon and gaseous products of activation. Pneumatic separation is carried out concurrently with drying in a layer suspended by a sharp jet of gaseous products of carbonization directed from top down. Carbonization is performed with a sharp jet of gaseous products while activation, with a sharp jet of water steam produced by heating water with the products of oxidizing gasification of the fraction with smaller particles. The installation for production of activated carbon comprises successively-connected drier, carbonizing reactor and an activation chamber with semi-coke loading unit and an activated carbon discharge unit, and a waste-heat boiler. The activation chamber has an external oxidizing gasification chamber whose inlet is connected by a pipe with the fuel-steam-gas mixture outlet from the drier and whose outlet, with the inlet of the waste-heat boiler which latter accommodates a coil, the coil outlet being connected via the carbonizing reactor discharge unit with the activation chamber by a pipe which is installed vertically in the upper part of the activation chamber. The steam-gas mixture outlet of the activation chamber is connected with the carbonizing reactor by a pipe installed vertically in the upper part of the carbonizing reactor while the steam-gas mixture outlet of the carbonizing reactor is connected with the drier by a pipe which is also installed vertically in the upper part of the drier.
