FIELD: spent fuel storage at nuclear power stations. SUBSTANCE: corrosion-inert gas is bubbled through water medium of cooling ponds at pH value of 6-8. In the process, escape of radiolytic decomposition products, hydrogen peroxide, nitrite, and ion nitrite reducing corrosion resistance of zirconium is decreased. Bubbling is performed periodically and inert gas is shut off as oxygen concentration is brought to 5-10 mcg/kg at safety layer-to- radiolysis region interface. Gas supply is resumed as soon as oxygen concentration rises to 15-2- mcg/kg. The pH value is maintained between 6 and 8 by doping with alkaline metal hydroxide solution, such as potassium hydroxide. EFFECT: improved condition of station auxiliaries coolant, improved radiation safety in cooling pond premises, improved corrosion resistance and integrity of spent fuel assembly claddings. 3 cl, 1 dwg
